Barcelona Transfer News: Huge Lionel Messi and Neymar Exit Rumours

It’s almost unsettling to imagine Barcelona icon Lionel Messi in the colours of any club team other than the Blaugrana, but there’s never been a more realistic chance of the 28-year-old leaving the Camp Nou, according to reports.
Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague relayed those details, telling Revista Bitesize (h/t Sky Sports), “It is the closest he's ever been to leaving Barcelona. It doesn't mean he will, but it is the closest he has ever been to leaving the club.”
Graham Hunter went on to note that an ongoing investigation into the player’s tax activities, which could see Messi jailed for up to 22 months if found guilty, may have made the forward more open to a potential move away from Catalonia.
Hunter touched upon the accusations Messi sought to defraud the Spanish tax authorities as a factor that could be pushing him out the door:
The climate, not just at the Camp Nou but in Catalonia, is probably enough to make him and his family scratch their heads and wonder.
I guess at his age... maybe you start to look at your next move and you think your next move at 28 is vitally important.
Do I stay? Do I look at pastures new? I wouldn't pretend to know what he's going to do but at this stage of his life and with Barcelona run in the way that it is, I think it's a story of merit. It's something I guess you and I will be talking about for months to come.
Emilio Morenatti/Associated Press

As noted in the piece from Sky Sports, the Sun recently reported three English teams—Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea—all made tentative enquiries to Messi’s representatives about the prospect of a transfer. The Premier League trio are certainly clubs with a lucrative pull that could potentially lure Messi too.
But Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu recently said anyone who believes these rumours should be “embarrassed,” per Marc Williams of the Daily Star. According to Sport, the Blaugrana want Messi to retire with them and are preparing a new contract for the forward despite an extension only being agreed in May 2014.
Most of the club's supporters are sure to be delighted to hear talks could be imminent over a new deal. Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez doesn’t feel as though there is much to the stories linking Messi with a move away anyway

Indeed, losing Messi could be catastrophic for Barcelona and they’ll be hoping the situation surrounding his tax activities is resolved swiftly, allowing him to get back to full fitness. The longer this goes on, the more likely it is stories will continue to swirl about his future.
Encouragingly for Barcelona, the club’s other two attacking crown jewels, Neymar and Luis Suarez, have stepped up in the absence of the Argentina international. However, the former has also been linked with a move away from the Camp Nou.
JOSEP LAGO/Getty Images

Neymar has been superb since Messi picked up his injury.
According to Don Balon (h/t Will Giles of Metro), the Brazilian wants a transfer as he seeks to fulfil his ambition of becoming the best player in the world. Giles wrote that Neymar has concerns about escaping Messi’s shadow and United would be a team, after showing interest in the summer, keen to sign the former Santos man.
As we can see here courtesy of Squawka Football, with Messi currently sidelined with injury problems, Neymar has stepped up in emphatic style.

Even though Messi will be the main man in Catalonia for a while yet, there have been few signs from the Brazilian that he’s unhappy with this dynamic. It seems as though Neymar enjoys playing alongside a genuine great of the sport and his game has improved massively over the course of the last couple of seasons as a result.
Eventually Neymar will have eyes for becoming the finest footballer in the world, but there’s no reason why he can’t do so at Barcelona. There will come a day when Messi will either leave or have his role reduced in significance, and the club’s current No. 11 is arguably the finest candidate in world football to fill such a massive void.  see more

'Absurd to Think of FC Barcelona Playing in France League'

Spanish Secretary of State for Sport Miguel Cardinal was responding to comments made by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who was born in Barcelona, that in the case of hypothetical Catalan independence, the French Ligue 1 would not close its doors to Barcelona

Barcelona Primera Liga
Barcelona will hope to retain the UEFA Champions League.

Madrid: Spanish Secretary of State for Sport, Miguel Cardinal, said on Wednesday that the idea of FC Barcelona playing in the French football league rather than the Spanish La Liga was "absurd".
Cardinal was responding to comments made by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who was born in Barcelona, that in the case of hypothetical Catalan independence, the French Ligue 1 would not close its doors to Barcelona, reports Xinhua.
"I don't think Valls said that phrase," said Cardinal, adding that "what governments think is irrelevant at this moment. We have to respect the autonomy of sport and of competitions and the organisations behind sport are not the organisms of the government, but of their respective federations."
Cardinal said the idea of Barcelona playing in France was "absurd", because "the championships are organised to discover which is the best team in their territory. In Portugal they want to know who the best Portuguese side is, in Italy, they want to know the best Italian side and in France, the best French club," he explained, perhaps forgetting the economic attraction of having a team such as Barcelona compete in the French league.
He also doubted whether Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who has tried to avoid becoming directly involved in the debate over Catalan independence, would want the club to play in a different league.
"A few weeks ago Bartomeu said the club wanted to continue playing in the Spanish League, as do all of the other Catalan clubs and I am certain that French clubs only want sides from France in their competition. It's something that depends on the nature of sport, not on governments," explained Cardinal.

Cristiano Ronaldo is set for an Old Trafford return... but only for Wayne Rooney's testimonial
After Manchester United supporters wrote to the club requesting a testimonial for Wayne Rooney, the club captain confirmed that a date had been set for the event via his Instagram account.

Although many of the finer details of the game are yet to be announced, the game promises to see a host of the game's stars descend on Old Trafford.
And according to a report in The Daily Star, Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to feature in the game after Rooney called his former teammate with an invitation to play.
The involvement of Ronaldo is sure to guarantee a sell-out crowd at the event, which takes place on August 3, 2016. see more

Blake Griffin's Kia ads have become must-see entertainment.
While none will ever rival the epic spot in which he's lunging on a tree stump and feeding a deer, his latest is pretty darn good.
The Los Angeles Clippers star is relaxing comfortably "in the zone" when a driver enters the picture. After a brief conversation, Griffin leaves "to go dunk over a couple guys."
Sounds about right.

Los Angeles Lakers Are Popular Bet in Las Vegas Despite Long Championship Odds
David J. Phillip/Associated Press
If the average fan had to put money on either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA title this season, the majority would ride with the Cavaliers.
However, Las Vegas bettors are going with the underdog.
According to David Purdum of ESPN.com, the Lakers are among the most popular bets in the NBA. Of course, that's likely because they are at 300-1 odds. Those odds indicate that it's a long shot that the team will be the last one standing, but that also means that there's potential for a huge payout.
Here are the teams attracting the most money at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, per Purdum:
  • Golden State Warriors
  • San Antonio Spurs
  • Los Angeles Clippers
  • Chicago Bulls
  • Los Angeles Lakers
None of the teams in the top five is overly surprising—until you see the second Los Angeles team. Most fans would expect to see teams like the Cavaliers or the Houston Rockets on that list, not the Lakers. But again, it's all about the odds.
"You get more sharp play on the season wins, betting the Lakers under," SuperBook assistant manager and NBA oddsmaker Jeff Sherman said, per Purdum. "But then you have the more general public saying, 'Let me take a shot at 300-1 on them.' Right now, the Lakers are third in ticket count in the entire NBA. They've got more tickets than Cleveland, more than Golden State."
The SuperBook has Cleveland as the favorites to win the title at 2-1 odds, so it's not surprising that the Cavaliers are not a popular pick among bettors. There's much greater upside elsewhere. According to Purdum, there have been 1.4 times more bets on the Lakers to win the championship than the Cavaliers.
Will the Lakers win the title? Some bettors may think that the reward is worth the risk. After all, the Lakers do still have Kobe Bryant, a five-time champion. Others may view those bets as a waste of money.
Then again, who would've had the New York Mets playing the Kansas City Royals in the World Series in March? Or Appalachian State beating No. 5 Michigan in the Big House back in 2007? The thing about sports is that anything can happen. see more

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Breaking down Game 1 of the World Series from Kauffman Stadium between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets:
Royals 5, Mets 4 (14 innings). Royals lead series 1-0.
***
The final: If the rest of this year’s World Series is anything like the opener, we truly have a Fall Classic on our hands.
Down to their final two outs, the Royals staged a dramatic ninth-inning comeback as Alex Gordon’s homer to dead center off Mets closer Jeurys Familia to tie the game.
Given new life, the Royals pulled out the walk-off win in the 14th on Eric Hosmer’s sacrifice fly off Bartolo Colon that scored Alcides Escobar from third. Escobar led off the 14th inning and reached on an error by Mets third baseman David Wright. He moved to third on a single by Ben Zobrist and scored on Hosmer’s medium-deep fly ball to right.
The game-winner was especially satisfying for Hosmer, whose error in the top of the eighth inning allowed Juan Lagares to score from second base and gave the Mets a 4-3 lead.
***
State of the Series: The Mets will try to rebound from a crushing defeat when they send Jacob deGrom (14-8, 2.54 ERA) to the mound for Game 2 on Wednesday. DeGrom has been magnificent this postseason, winning all three of his starts, allowing four earned runs in 20 innings (1.80 ERA) and striking out 27 batters.
Kansas City will counter with trade-deadline acquisition Johnny Cueto (11-13, 3.44 ERA), who was just 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA for the Royals. Cueto’s last start was a disaster. He gave up eight earned runs in two innings in a blowout loss in Toronto. However, manager Ned Yost slotted Cueto for Game 2 (and if necessary, Game 6) so he would make both starts at home. “More than anything he really feeds off of our home crowd,” Yost said. “So to be able to pitch two games if needed in this stadium I think will benefit him.”
***
Man of the moment: Of all the pitchers in the Kansas City bullpen who could have won the game in extra innings, Chris Young might have been the least likely.
The game went so deep into extra innings that the Royals turned their scheduled starter in Game 4 to pitch the 12th. Facing the heart of the Mets order, Young struck out Daniel Murphy, Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda – all swinging.
Then after the Royals failed to score in the bottom of the inning, Young came back out to pitch a scoreless 13th and 14th. In all, he threw 53 pitches, allowed one walk and struck out four.
***
Game 1 pivot point: Royals left fielder Alex Gordon hasn’t had a signature moment this postseason … until now. His clutch home run in the bottom of the ninth was the first run allowed by Mets closer Jeurys Familia in the playoffs.
Gordon drilled a 1-1 sinker from Familia 428 feet to dead center field to send the sellout crowd of 40,320 at Kauffman Stadium into a frenzy – and send the game into extra innings.
***
Needing a mulligan: Starting the game in center field, Yoenis Cespedes misplayed Alcides Escobar’s fly ball into an inside-the-park home run the bottom of the first inning.
He appeared to be in position to make the catch in left-center field, but as he and left fielder Michael Conforto converged, Cespedes made an unsuccessful backhanded stab at the ball. Once the ball hit off his arm, it rolled past Conforto – and Escobar circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run.
While Cespedes is much better suited for a corner outfield spot, he was in center because of the injury to slick-fielding Juan Lagares, who has been dealing with an elbow injury for most of the season. Lagares is on the postseason roster, but will likely only serve as a defensive replacement in the series.
***
Manager's special: Although the Royals managed to tie the game in the ninth, they missed a golden opportunity to do it one inning earlier when Ben Zobrist doubled to lead off the eighth.
It may have seemed like a typical move by Royals manager Ned Yost, but Lorenzo Cain (.307, 16 HR, 72 RBI during the regular season) tried to bunt Zobrist over to third.
Yost said afterward that the decision was Cain's.
"We give our guys the freedom to play their style, give them the freedom to bunt," Yost said. "He just felt like our best chance of winning the ballgame was to get it down, get the runner to third and drive him in from there."
According to Baseball Prospectus’ run expectancy chart for 2015, a team with a runner on second and no outs will score an average of 1.08 runs in the inning. With a runner on third and one out, it drops to 0.89.
Cain whiffed on his first bunt attempt and fouled off the second. Swinging away with two strikes, Cain swung and missed for the first out. The Royals failed to tie the score in the inning when Familia came in to get the final out.
***
Needing a mulligan II: Fox Sports definitely needed one for the television broadcast. The main Fox TV feed lost power in the bottom of the fourth inning, causing a seven-minute delay while neither team had replay capability.
The game resumed after both managers agreed to continue the game with limited use of replay. Fox had to use its international broadcast feed – and move its national crew to the international booth.
***
What you missed on TV: Network broadcasts are hesitant to report the kind of news that spread like wildfire on Twitter before the start of Game 1.
ESPNDeportes.com was first to report that Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez took the mound after his father, 63-year-old Daniel Volquez, had died earlier in the day of heart complications in the Dominican Republic.
However, there were conflicting reports of whether or not Volquez was aware of the news. Fox finally waited until the bottom of the eighth inning to mention the story.

Barcelona Transfer News: Lionel Messi Exit Rumours Slammed by Josep Bartomeu
Francisco Seco/Associated Press
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has branded rumours about Lionel Messi potentially leaving the club for the Premier League as embarrassing, suggesting the forward could retire at the Camp Nou. Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague confirmed there had been contact between the player’s representatives and some Premier League clubs recently, sparking rumours of what would be a sensational switch to English football. According to the Sun (h/t Marc Williams of the Daily Star), Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are all interested parties.
But Bartomeu has calmed the nerves of all fans concerned about their star man departing, per Marc Williams of the Daily Star:
People who say Messi is leaving Barcelona should be embarrassed. Messi is recovering for the Madrid-Barcelona game. He is hoping to play El Clasico, but injuries have their process.
Leo and his father said they don't imagine playing at another club. The relationship with the family is very good. We are not in the negotiation phase yet, when the time comes it will be presented. He has a contract for the next three seasons.
LLUIS GENE/Getty Images

Messi is currently out of the team injured and, as noted by Bartomeu, is hopeful of returning for the clash with Real Madrid in late November.
After some issues getting results without Messi initially, Barca are beginning to cope a lot better in recent games, with Neymar and Luis Suarez each showing a willingness to take on more responsibility. However, Messi is a player who remains the key figure at the Camp Nou and the thought of him donning the club colours of anyone else is a peculiar one.
As we can see here courtesy of Grup 14 (h/t BarcaStat), even though he has been on the sidelines for a few weeks, the Argentina international remains top of various statistical categories:
While the injury issues haven’t made matters particularly easy for Messi at the moment, neither has the ongoing investigation into his tax activities, which will see the 28-year-old appear as a defendant in court alongside his father Jorge.
“Messi is very angry about the Spanish taxation,” Bartomeu admitted, per Williams. “It is not normal, the information published on Leo Messi. If his tax advisers have made a mistake they have to pay like everyone else. Messi deserves respect as all do.”
Emilio Morenatti/Associated Press

It is a far from an ideal situation for the Barcelona man to be in, but it’s clear he’s still enjoying his football at the Camp Nou. After all, the form he showcased in the second half of the 2014-15 season was simply sensational, as Messi, alongside Neymar and Suarez, helped Barcelona blitz their way to treble glory.
As was evident during Barca’s 3-1 win over Eibar at the weekend, even as a spectator, the club’s iconic No. 10 remains completely immersed in the team’s fortunes too, per Footy Accumulators:
For Barcelona to sell Messi would be a major gamble. Not only is he the finest player in world football, but he’s a figure of immense gravitas that the Blaugrana chiefs would find impossible to replace.
As such, those parties who may fancy bringing him to the Premier League are unlikely to be successful in their endeavours. For as long as Bartomeu is at the helm, anyway. see more

Lionel Messi absence still being felt by Barcelona, says Sergio Busquets

The ESPN FC crew take a look at Neymar's performance for Barcelona in Lionel Messi's absence and discuss whether he plays better with the superstar on the field with him.
Sergio Busquets has hailed Barcelona teammate Neymar for his sizzling recent form on the pitch, but says the loss of Lionel Messi to injury is still being felt within the Blaugrana team.
Speaking ahead of Barcelona's Champions League clash with BATE Borisov on Tuesday, Busquets praised Neymar for stepping up in Messi's stead.

"He's one of the leaders for his characteristics, the way he plays and what he brings, and more now without Leo. We hope to continue on a roll," Busquets told gathered media on Monday.
Neymar scored four goals in Barca's 5-2 defeat of Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, prompting the Brazil captain to proclaim the performance one of the best of his Barcelona career.
Despite the virtuoso display, however, Busquets cautioned that Messi's absence from the team was still apparent.
"We are noticing the absence of Messi because he's our player, the most dominating and the best in the world. We have to give a little more to be noticed as little as possible, but it's inevitable it's noticed," the Spanish international midfielder said.
Neymar has done his best to step up in Lionel Messi's stead.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique added that he is not in search of a Messi replacement.
"We intend to work as a bloc," said Luis Enrique, who is in his second year in charge of the club. "We are not looking for someone to lead us. We already have a leader, that's Leo Messi."
For his part, fellow forward Luis Suarez echoed his manager and said Messi's contribution to the team is impossible to replicate.
"Messi's irreplaceable [in terms of a single player replacing him]. Without him, we must take responsibility together," Suarez told TV3.
"Everyone knows what their role within the team is and I know mine; helping my teammates in addition to scoring goals.
"Messi's the best player in the world and no one can replace him.
"[Messi, Neymar and I] are always laughing. Neymar already knew his role when he arrived. He respects Leo, like we all do." reed more

Spanish football giants FC Barcelona will meet BATE Borisov in an away group E game as it will miss its star striker Lionel Messi who is suffering suffering from an injury.
FC Barcelona
Barcelona is leading the group while the hosts are in the third position.
As in the absense of Messi, the scoring burden come to Brazilian sensation Neymar Jr. and Uruguayan and former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez.
Neymar is on a scoring form as he scored four goals in a La Liga match against Rayo Vallecono while Suarez scored the fifth goal.

But the main concern is their defence as they are struggling with few defenders are injured for the defending champions.  more
